Een mix tussen Townes van Zandt, Ray Lamontagne, John Lee Hooker en een slide gitaar? Dat klinkt bijzonder, en dat is Eli Waltz volgens ons ook. Liedje The Enemy is reuze catchy. Psychedelische blues-folk? Afkomstig van meest recente EP The Enemy.

How can we tell if the bad guys are really the bad guys? Sometimes the “enemy” is just whom we perceive, a person or group we’ve built up in our heads that’s out to get us but in reality they’re just as human as you and me. Other times though, there is a genuine, living, breathing, malevolent foe out there in the real world, who wishes us harm and from whom we must defend ourselves. How do we know which is which?

Julian Taylor geeft ons met track Georgia Moon een soulvol folk-liedje waar best wel wat 60’s in zit. Jackson Browne wellicht?  Als je het fijn vind, luister dan ook even naar prijsliedje Ballad of a Young Troubadour, afkomstig van z’n vorige plaat.

Dat geldt voor de muziek, maar het is tegelijkertijd ook de bandnaam. Goed gevonden. Neem nou liedje The Beast Is Me. Rauwe, kampvuur-achtige fingerpicking folk en blues. Zoals ook C.W. Stoneking hem maakt.

Het nummer staat op album A Beast Is Me, ook een dikke aanrader.

De mannen van R.J. Archer & The Painful Memories hebben niet alleen een goede bandnaam, ze maken ook nog eens erg aanstekelijke country blues. Zoals liedje High Horse. Een liedje waarin de invloeden van CCR, Small Faces en Status Quo ook hoorbaar zijn. En zou Jagger ook niet een prima versie van dit liedje neer kunnen zetten? Enfin, wij vinden het lekker!

De titel doet al een klein beetje vermoeden wat voor liedje Everybody Wants To Be A Cowboy is. En inderdaad, het is een heerlijke western / cowboy / honkytonk mix. Afzender? Ross Cooper, een voormalig (hoe kan het ook anders) rodeo cowboy uit Texas. Authentieker wordt het haast niet.

It’s the part of me that has endured and makes me feel like I have a purpose. It’s so hard for me to pick a favorite on this album. Klaar voor wat Texaanse alt-country? Dat hebben we The Droptines met liedje Raining Where You Are voor je. Verder geen bio, feiten, nieuwtjes. Gewoon een heel erg lekker nummer.

Klaar voor een goede portie 60’s dream folk? Kevin Morby meets CSNY, bijvoorbeeld. Dat is Joe Bourdet met liedje Silk Robe, Garden Flowers. Zelfs het artwork is in die stijl. Zit dus meer dan prima in elkaar, de muziek van Joe Bourdet.

Aaron Boyd maakte in 2019 flink wat los met album Until The End. Met name bij country / Americana-minnend publiek en liefhebbers van Sturgill Simpson, Cody Jinks en Colter Wall. Zo ook bij ons. Nu is er met Coming Undone een opvolger. Van die plaat halen we vandaag graag liedje Earthly Sorrow. Daarin staat Aaron stil bij het feit dat hij inmiddels meer dan 2 jaar sober is.

Prachtige diepe stem, pedal-steel, akoestische gitaar. Meer hebben we niet nodig.
