Laat je meevoeren door Calming River


En dan met name door liedje Feather By Feather. Een kalme, prachtige track. Doe je ogen dicht en je hoort Sufjan Stevens, Other Lives, om maar wat te noemen. En de track heeft ook nog een boodschap:

Inspired by Madeleine Albright’s non-fiction ‘Fascism’, the track plays on Benito Mussolini’s despotic approach to the erasure of civil liberty, one-by-one, feather-by-feather, an almost imperceptible change that eventually removes all.

Ook leuk om te melden, we werden getipt door Bobby McBride, van Bonnie Cried. Zo helpen we elkaar in deze tijden aan nieuwe muziek. En in het geval van Calming River volledig geslaagd dus.

De nieuwe wereld van Okabe


Nee, het was geen vooruitziende blik van Okabe. Liedje New World gaat namelijk over “alienation through technological innovation”.

How although we’re more connected than we’ve ever been, sometimes it can feel like we’re more disconnected than ever before. The lyrics came while I was watching a group of dogs playing together in a park while their owners were all standing together staring at their phones, devoid of any contact. It was also the first time I’ve recorded every instrument in the studio so that was a fun and challenging process for me.

En dat doet hij op een manier die het midden houdt tussen Arctic Monkeys, Broken Bells, Dan Auerbach (soms horen we dat in de vocals) en Tame Impala. En dat maakt New World bijzonder prettig om naar te luisteren.

The Bull Brothers – A Good Thing


The Bull Brothers, vijf mannen uit Londen. Maar ze namen Too Much of a Good Thing op in Nashville, met Grammy Award winner Paul Ebersold. Maar verwacht geen typische Nashville Sound. Deze track klinkt bluesy, Black Keys-achtig. Toegegeven, met een vleugje Jason Isbell.

Melted Vinyl combineert er op los


Wat gebeurt er als je The Delta Saints, Rival Sons en Gary Clark Jr. combineert? Dan krijgt je iets als Melted Vinyl. Want luister eens naar liedje Dionysus. Waar het over gaat?

The lyrics combines the mythology and symbolism of the god of wine into a kind of allegory of alcoholism, or addiction in general, something I’ve seen the effects of personally.

We laten Sam Carlson niet met rust


Eind vorig jaar schreven we over Sam Carlson. Liedje Time Moves Fast deed ons denken aan Tyler Childers en Sturgill Simpson. Nieuwste track Leave Me Alone past eigenlijk prima in dat straatje. En we gaan deze track, samen met o.a. Time Moves Fast vinden op zijn aanstaande debuutalbum. Hebben we zin in!

De energie van AllTooHuman


Wat we horen in Fossilizing van het Israelische AllTooHuman? Om te beginnen een deuntje dat zo van The Doors had kunnen zijn. Overstuurde gitaren. Een beetje blues. Energie. Reden genoeg om je het liedje niet te onthouden.

AllTooHuman is trouwens het project van Ron Shetrit: a young Israeli singer-songwriter, that writes observational texts about himself and his surroundings, and explores “all too human” feelings – such as love, intimacy, loss and friendship.

En luister ook even naar debuutplaat Prayers in the Night. Iets meer singer-songwriter, maar zeker niet minder tof :)

De straat op met Seville

De mannen van Seville (uit Italie) stuurden ons No Streets To Run. En dat vinden we een heerlijk liedje. Vandaar dat we het graag even met je delen. En je gelijk wijzen op Who Has Decided For Us, het debuutalbum dat in februari uit moet komen. Wij kijken daar best wel naar uit.
En voor wat betreft dit liedje? De perfecte soundtrack van een nachtelijke rit op een lege snelweg. Wel uitkijken, he.

A “visual” song wich opens out into the void, describing a sunny desert in which a lonely hermit advances. This absence of civilization is, however, filled: that desolate place will be, in fact, reached by the railroad tracks (a metaphor for the civilization which goes on) and a city will be built on that land. In the second part, after a significant time jump, the city has turned into a metropolis and the focus shifts on an individual and to his inner dimension: on the one hand, a feeling of uncertainty and oppression related to city life, on the other a reminder of the open spaces of the natural world. A combination which turns into a unbridled race against time, beyond the barriers of the city
