Twee jaar geleden schreven we enthousiast over duo Westrin & Mowry, op basis van liedje I’m Awake For Sure. En enthousiast dat zijn we nog steeds, ook n.a.v. liedje Surface to Air. “Darkness In Your Eyes is about recognising desperation in someone and trusting your instincts when you know someone isn’t being themselves, or something isn’t right and they’re trying to hide it. The lyrics touch on themes of loneliness and it’s about people craving intimacy and affection, often in the wrong places and from the wrong people” .
Joey Haynes kennen je waarschijnlijk / misschien als een van de founding members van het awesome Bear’s Den. Onder de naam John Revelle heeft Joe nu een solo debuut single uitgebracht die luistert naar de titel This Bird Has Flown. Het klinkt ietsjes anders, iets rustiger dan Bear’s Den, maar de vibe is wel voelbaar. Evenals die van Leif Vollebekk of zelfs Neil Young (Harvest-style). En het goede nieuws: een EP’tje is onderweg!
The original plan was to release the songs about a year ago, but yeah, Covid happened, and everything was put on hold. After months of holding out in the hopes that the pandemic subside sufficiently to make it possible to play gigs and festivals to support the release, I finally decided to pull the plug. I still plan to tour and play the songs live once the world opens up again. There’s a real DIY ethos permeating the making of this EP, and it’s completely self-funded and independently released, and I’m very happy with the result and look forward to sharing it with everyone.
We laten je graag kennismaken met Robert Finley. Een oorlogsveteraan en houtbewerker. En al tientallen jaren zonder zicht. Het deed ‘m besluiten zijn muzikale dromen na te jagen. En die carrière zit stevig in de lift sinds Dan Auerbach (Black Keys) Robert ontdekte en helemaal gek werd van enthousiasme. Zo gek zelfs dat hij Robert’s vorige album Goin’ Platinum opnam en produceerde, en hetzelfde deed met opvolger Sharecroppers Son (verschijnt eind mei). En als Dan ergens zijn stempel op zet, dan weet je dat het goed is. En bluesy. En swampy. En funky. En niets is minder waar met liedje Country Boy.
Dylan Cox komt uit Amerika, maar brengt veel tijd door in La Villa Magnan in Biaritz. Hij schrijft er liedjes en nam er zijn allereerste officiële liedje Animals in the Kitchen op. Dat deed hij samen met muzikanten en producers die veel tijd met Andrew Bird doorbrengen. En dat hoor je best. Nice! Needless to say zijn wij erg benieuwd naar de rest. We houden je op de hoogte!
Josh Morningstar heeft een heerlijk relaxte stem, ietwat schurend. En vindt het leuk om, vaak grappige, verhalen te vertellen of stereotyperingen omver te halen in zijn liedjes. Zo ook in Sanatorium Lovesick Blues #4702. Up-tempo en zelfs een beetje funky.
Bij Cork denken we, bijna vanzelfsprekend, aan prachtige muziek. Zoals bijvoorbeeld van Mick Flannery. En niet te vergeten van Sean William Murphy, oftewel All the Queen’s Horses. Prachtig, stemmig, verdrietig. Verdere vergelijkingen? Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits, Bright Eyes en Damien Rice.
I wrote this song as an allegory to The Ides of March and all the turbulence, mischance and omens that surround the Ides of March (March 15th the 74th day in the Roman calendar). It was notable for the Romans as a deadline for settling debts. It was the date Julius Caesar was stabbed to death which then also triggered a civil war. The date is synonymous with a myriad of significant unfortunate events, bad luck & bad omens
The song is very simple. I tried to create a situation with someone who has always had a lot of trouble, bad luck and misfortune who carries it to others who have had to carry him who he thinks can and will help him and are like him ‘’You’d bleed like me….I was told’’. I tried to show the devastating effect mischance, debt and conflict has had on their lives and how they had to pay for their crimes forming the Ides of March an endless sea of bad luck and bad luck and bad luck.
